As I answer all the e-mail that comes to the site I figured it was time to give some of the new folks in our industry a peek at what to expect and hopefully a few ways to capitalize on the money and products that are available if you know where to look.
Many of you ask where to start?
Basic Sponsorship:
The best place to get an idea on how to get started is to look around the paddock and see who is offering contingency by looking at the stickers on the bodywork. Also, in tech you can usually get a list of contingency sponsors and what is required to be in the program. Usually it using the product on your motorcycle like the bodywork, clip ons, foot pegs, tires, brake pads, rotors, windscreens, electronic tachs, computers etc. Others include leather and glove manufacturers, helmets companies, body armor, cool suits, etc.
Lots of companies in our industry off some kind of cash or product or deep discounts on stuff that you are going to need. Most would like to see their names often especially on your results sheets. You need to update the list of sponsors behind your riders name often and through the sanctioning bodies administrative services. Doing it at the track is usually a temporary solution however does not often make it to the next race weekend so you have to start all over again. All contingency sponsors get a copy of the race results and look to see if you are doing your part. If not you get cut off or are not offered the same program the next time you ask.
You do not have to be the first guy or lady across the line to get help with your racing efforts however it helps to be in the top five and consistently. Everyone loves a winner and most cant tell you who was in second place (unless Im at the track) but, this will not limit you as much as you think. You will notice banners from several contingency sponsors and some that are not around the paddock or on the side of trailers or transporters. Not everyone can get help, you have to earn it. Remembering to thank a sponsor or someone who helps you get to the track or supports your efforts is the most important thing you can do to enhance your racing program. This would include you boss, family and buddies who help your effort. See related story on Whats My Job.
Photo opportunities:
We have photographers all over the country at nearly every event who will take pictures of you in all your glory (no not your birthday suit... well maybe if you ask nice) out on the race track. Another good idea is a group shot of you and your team... and one of you and the boss and his family, very important. A good shot of you with your hair combed or styled is another must. You want lots of copies, it is part of your weekend budget. Why you ask?
Simple. You need to supply photos to your sponsors, your boss and dont forget grandma.
Support the photographers and they will make sure you look good. Another reason to collect as many photos as you can stand is for your retirement and old age. When the body gets tired and you are sitting in your rocker on the porch you will thank me. (First hand knowledge).
Local companies:
May time you can find a local company that will help with your racing efforts. Perhaps a few bucks for tires or your sign up fees on a race weekend. The loan of a motorhome or trailer to use at the track. The list goes on and on however the most important part is remember to say thanks.
Marketing is a huge part of getting a local company to help out. You need to drag your bike and trailer to shows, grand openings, the county fair or wherever a lot of people gather. Many of our racers have picked up new sponsors at show and other venues. When it becomes a one on one situation you find it a lot easier to present yourself. On the phone there is no visual effect like there is when you are all set up and presenting your self to the general public.
Always take a race schedule with you and invite folks to stop by and say hello at the track. As much as you love your machinery, it is a good idea to prop your sponsors kid up on the seat and take their photo. Sounds corny but it works. You have to make a serious effort to get a good sponsor and if you are smart enough to realize that this is a good program, work to keep it by taking care of your sponsors and visitors to your pit area. Impressions are going to make the difference between going to 4 races a year or 20.
You need to make an impression on and off the track. Once you work at it, you will be successful. Just divide your time up on a race weekend. The easiest way to have more time is to have the entire bike ready to race before you get to the track. I see so many racers spending every free minute at the track working on their bikes. You never remember everything that needs to be done when you are under pressure to make the next practice session or the race itself.
Well, I hope this will give you a basic idea of how it works. Visit with your buddies (the ones that are successful and see how they do it.). Read Big Bucks too!
